By: Andrew Tepperman<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n I<\/span>n 1920, my grandfather Nate Tepperman an immigrant arrived to Canada with nothing. There was no MCC back then, no language or settlement services, and no community connections. His drive, determination and values system was passed on to future generations helping us reach our company\u2019s 97th<\/sup> anniversary this year. \u00a0We have 6 Guiding Principle that steer us through life, 1 of them being about strengthening our communities.\u00a0 We believe we have a responsibility and obligation.\u00a0<\/p>\n This was apparent during the pandemic when, having no idea what lied ahead for us, we created a new multi-year Indigenous Scholarship program at the University of Windsor for post-graduate studies.\u00a0 Or a few years ago when we experienced an increase in refugees, we found opportunities to donate products, specifically helping children. This year we are committing additional funds to helping marginalized and racialized students reach college and university. Our vision aligns very closely with the MCC.<\/p>\n Windsor\/Essex is a special place.\u00a0 The diversity of people brings diversity of thinking and new approaches.\u00a0 It can be difficult coming to a new country. \u00a0It can be even more challenging not having the language, education or money.\u00a0 People with dreams have been immigrating here from all over the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n Today, we are fortunate to have an organization that makes the transition better. \u00a0There\u2019s no better time having a strong and effective MCC to meet the increasing demand of newcomer orientation and education. \u00a0What\u2019s special about our diversity is that while we all live in the greatest country of Canada, we get to be exposed to incredible cultural experiences from around the world with music, dance, the arts, food, literature and more.\u00a0 Multi-culturalism strengthens community foundations.\u00a0 Even more when it can be nurtured by an organization like MCC. \u00a0One of the questions for all of us is, how do we capitalize on this diversity to strengthen our community for the future generations.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Andrew Tepperman<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n President, inline_fonts=\"Poppins\"] <\/p>\n The <\/span><\/span>MCC Harmony Through Education<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span> scholarship program creates opportunities, fosters aspirations, and expands potentials.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n With the financial support of individual donors, the program supports the education efforts of newcomers in Windsor-Essex. Through this initiative, the MCC is able to contribute to covering the cost of education-related expenses.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n One our generous program donors, the <\/span><\/span>Jaber Buchanan Foundation, <\/b><\/span><\/span>recently supported a young newcomer named Misslie with her pursuit of a diploma in the Early Childhood Education Program at St. Clair College.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u201c<\/span>Being alone in Canada, without family, she had few people to rely on. With the help of the scholarship and MCC along the way, she was able to achieve a major goal. It will assist her in finding stable employment once Covid 19 is over.\u201d Patricia, MCC Case Manager<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The fund addresses the education and financial challenges faced by many newcomers and helps to celebrate their ambitions and accomplishments.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cBy awarding me the scholarship, you have reduced my financial burden which allowed me to focus on my school work and not to worry about my other expenses. Even though online learning with the second language was a challenge, my dedication and passion for higher education have allowed me to achieve a grade point average of 3.54. Receiving this scholarship motivated me to maintain my GPA and complete the program. I look forward to being able to give back to the community once I begin my career.\u201d Misslie, Scholarship Recipient<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n Misslie completed her program earlier this year. She found a temporary on-call position in a women\u2019s shelter and is currently looking for fulltime employment.\u00a0 She has shared that the scholarship assisted her in paying for school expenses, especially computer and internet expenses which were essential during the pandemic.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n This scholarship program serves to help in creating a welcoming community by addressing an identified barrier to success and participation in educational pursuits.
